Uncovering the Secrets to True Fulfilment: Are You an Underfulfilled Overachiever?

The Pursuit of Happiness in a Busy World
Author Annie Dillard once said, “how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” Yet, many of us find ourselves feeling dissatisfied despite making good life choices. After attending Stanford University and landing a job at Google in New York, I realized that I was not alone in my feelings of depression and anxiety. This led to the concept of the underfulfilled overachiever (UFOA): individuals who seem successful on paper but feel disconnected from their true selves.
The Hustle Culture Trap
In our fast-paced society, hustle culture glorifies busyness and achievement. We often measure success through productivity and accolades, but this mindset can lead to burnout and mental health issues. In fact, nearly 50% of millennials report experiencing symptoms of depression, highlighting a broken system that equates achievement with happiness.
The Flaws of Destinational Living
Destinational living promotes the idea that we can achieve happiness by defining a perfect life plan and following it. However, this approach often leads to outsourcing our decision-making, causing us to replicate others’ paths rather than discovering what truly matters to us. Fulfilment is not merely about reaching milestones; it requires a deeper understanding of oneself.
Finding Directional Living
Instead of striving for external validation, I propose directional living. This method encourages you to develop a hypothesis about your life direction, conduct experiments, and refine your goals based on your experiences. For instance, if you dream of living by the beach, try renting a coastal home for a month to see if it aligns with your desires. The focus is on discovering your truth rather than conforming to societal expectations.
Embracing Your True Self
Ultimately, the journey to fulfilment is personal and unique. As we navigate our lives, let us remember that the privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are. By embracing our individual paths, we can find the true meaning of success and happiness.
