Recruiting an apprentice is one of the best ways to build a skilled workforce while investing in the future of your business. To encourage more employers to take on apprentices, the Government has introduced a range of apprenticeship funding opportunities for 2026, making it more affordable to recruit and train new talent.
For employers in the construction industry, the benefits are even greater. Alongside Government incentives, eligible businesses may also be able to claim up to £8,500 in CITB grants for each apprentice enrolled on an approved programme. Combined, these funding opportunities can provide significant financial support while helping to address the industry’s ongoing skills shortage.
Government Incentives Available
Depending on the apprentice you recruit, your business could be eligible for up to £6,000 in Government funding through three different schemes.
- The Government Young Apprentice Payment offers £1,000 to employers who recruit an apprentice aged 16–18, or someone aged 19–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or who is a care leaver. The payment is made in two instalments of £500 after 12 weeks and 12 months on programme.
- The Government Apprenticeship Hiring Incentive (from 1 October 2026) provides an additional £2,000 when recruiting a new apprentice aged 16–24, provided the employer’s annual PAYE wage bill is below £3 million and the apprentice meets the qualifying criteria.
- The Government Youth Jobs Grant (from 1 July 2026) offers up to £3,000 for employers who recruit a young person aged 16–24 who is receiving Universal Credit and has been unemployed for six months or more. Payments are made directly to employers after six and eighteen weeks of employment.
Additional CITB Grants
Construction employers may also be eligible for up to £8,500 in CITB grants for each apprentice they enrol. These grants help offset the cost of training and make construction apprenticeships an even more cost-effective way to develop skilled employees.
When combined with Government apprenticeship funding in 2026, CITB grants can provide substantial financial support for businesses looking to grow their workforce.
Why Choose Construction Apprenticeships?
Construction apprenticeships enable employers to develop skilled workers who understand the needs of their business from day one. Apprentices gain valuable practical experience alongside recognised qualifications, while employers benefit from improved productivity, stronger staff retention and a pipeline of future talent.
With financial support available through Government incentives and CITB grants, there has never been a better time to invest in apprentices.
