Unlock Student Success: 4 Game-Changing Strategies for the New Gatsby Benchmarks in UK Schools

This year, schools in the UK are undergoing a major transformation in how they prepare students for their careers. The updated Gatsby Benchmarks, now part of government guidance, make careers education a core part of every school's culture, moving it from an optional add-on to an essential component.

Prepare for Change

Work experience is evolving beyond the traditional Year 10 placement. Starting in September 2025, students should engage in one week of experience across Years 7 to 9, plus an additional five days in Years 10 and 11. This involves structured activities, employer projects, visits, or virtual encounters to provide real-world insights. Early and broad exposure helps students explore various industries and build confidence in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

The Careers and Enterprise Commission (CEC) offers a flexible framework with learning outcomes to support schools in this transition.

Make Encounters Meaningful

The new guidance emphasizes the quality of employer interactions. Students should not just observe but understand the purpose, interact with employees, tackle real tasks, receive feedback, and reflect on their learning. These experiences link classroom education to the skills and behaviors needed for success in life and work, fostering both insight and aspiration.

Put Parents and Carers at the Heart

Parents and carers are key influencers in career decisions and are now seen as active partners. Schools can integrate this by hosting careers-focused events, sharing family quizzes, conversation guides, and resources for educators. The aim is to ensure families are confident and informed in guiding young people's choices.

Tap into Your Local Careers Hub

Engagement with Careers Hubs is at record levels, with 93% of schools and colleges participating. These hubs connect educators with employers, training, resources, and peer support, making it easier to meet statutory requirements and ensure no student is left behind. Progress is evident, with a quarter of institutions achieving all eight Gatsby Benchmarks, an 8% increase in workplace experiences last year, and an estimated £150 million annual economic saving from reduced NEET numbers.

Supported by established national and local structures, schools and employers are well-positioned to equip every young person for their next steps.
