Scottish Careers Week is a vibrant celebration of diverse work opportunities and the extensive support available for all ages. From November 10-14, this initiative, coordinated by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), showcases the breadth of industries and career paths through hundreds of local and national events.
Events and Activities Across Scotland
Hundreds of events are scheduled, including careers fairs and online information sessions. SDS, in partnership with various organizations, provides qualified careers advisers in every state school and community locations nationwide. Schools like Kirkwall Grammar in Orkney, Wallace High in Stirling, and Taylor High in Motherwell are actively participating, helping students connect with employers, universities, and colleges.
Organizations such as MCR Pathways are taking pupils out of the classroom for hands-on career experiences with companies like Scottish Power and Glasgow Life. Interactive workshops, including live drone sessions at Lanark Grammar, and Dragon’s Den-style events in North Lanarkshire, encourage entrepreneurial thinking among primary and secondary pupils.
National and Online Initiatives
A range of online events supports primary and secondary pupils, coinciding with Computing Science Scotland Week. TechSheCan hosts live technology lessons on topics like AI in Robotics. Inspirational online panel sessions feature young professionals in Creative Industries, Engineering, Construction, and Health and Social Care, organized with partners like e-Sgoil and Education Scotland.
Support for Parents and Carers
Recognizing parents and carers as key influencers, SDS offers free webinars sharing insights from Pupil Voice and Parents and Carers Voice research. These sessions cover career aspirations, influences, and available resources, helping families navigate career decisions.
Real-Life Success Story
Elita Smith from Largs faced challenges due to ill health but achieved her dream of studying law with support from careers adviser Paul Aitken. Paul provided guidance on university applications, secured work experience at Greenock Sheriff Court, and helped with interview preparation, leading to Elita's successful enrollment in a law degree program.
