Unlock Your Dream Career: How Adult Learners in Essex Are Transforming Their Lives with GCSEs

Adult Learners Across Essex Embark on New Careers Thanks to Passing GCSEs

This year, ACL Essex has supported numerous adults in improving their career prospects by gaining GCSEs in English, maths, and science. Among those celebrating their achievements is David Scales, 53, from Colchester.

David has been working in Chelmsford as an emergency care support worker for the ambulance service for the last seven years. He studied Level 2 English at ACL Essex's Colchester site, having previously passed Level 1 and 2 maths, and Level 1 English with ACL Essex.

David's motivation for studying was to advance his career in the ambulance service and become a technician. He said: "I passed and that was exactly what I needed, and I’m happy about that. To progress in my role, you need a C (grade 4 equivalent) or above in English and maths. If you haven’t got them, the ambulance service offers courses in-house for functional skills Level 2. However, I used ACL Essex instead as I’ve had such great success with them before."

Jonathan Cook, 37, from Colchester, has been a chef for over 20 years and is now seeking a career change to teach in the hospitality sector. This August, Jonathan passed GCSE English with a grade 5 and is currently doing a functional skills maths course online.

Jonathan said: "A couple of years ago, around the time of the pandemic, I was sat at home thinking about my future. People over the years said that they could see me in a teaching role, but I never really thought about it seriously until my wife made a comment about my long hours. I discovered that I had D grades for English and maths, so I was just short of what is needed to teach. It was very annoying to have borderline qualifications when a teaching job became available at the college. The disappointment of my grades not being quite good enough really spurred me on to get better grades. After seeing my former lecturers, I found the right course for me at ACL Essex."

Lenny Bright, 24, also from Colchester, gained a GCSE grade 4 in biology in August and now intends to go to university. Lenny said: "I’m happy with the grade 4. When I was studying applied science at college a few years ago, biology was one of the areas I fell behind in. So, getting the grade 4 is very good for me. I can now go to university and study sociology. ACL Essex has been very positive, very supportive, and good with people with special needs. They give one-to-one support that mainstream schools are not able to give."

Tony Ball, councillor responsible for education excellence, lifelong learning, and employability at Essex County Council, congratulated all the learners. He said: "ACL Essex has once again supported many adults across the county to gain the GCSEs they need to further their careers. Many learners have had to juggle work and family commitments to secure their grades. They’re now able to take the next step with their careers, and we would like to congratulate every single one of them."

ACL Essex offers flexible options, including online classes, evening sessions, and community-based centres across the county. To find out more or to sign-up for one of the courses, visit www.aclessex.com.
