A new careers initiative is launching to help young people with additional needs explore employment and training opportunities in Kirklees and Calderdale.
The Next Steps Careers Event will provide young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) aged 14 to 25 the chance to discover potential career paths as they transition into adulthood.
Bringing Opportunities Together Under One Roof
The event will take place on Wednesday 25 March from 12 pm to 5 pm at the Holiday Inn in Brighouse (HD6 4HW).
Jointly funded by Kirklees Council and Calderdale Council, this gathering will bring together a wide range of employers, training providers, education settings, and partner organizations.
Attendees will have access to specialist advice and practical support on jobs, apprenticeships, and further training opportunities.
Organizers emphasize that the event aims to create a supportive and welcoming environment where young people with SEND and their families can easily explore available opportunities.
Developed with Young People and Families
This is the first event of its kind hosted by C+K Careers, developed in collaboration with young people with SEND, parent and carer groups, and professionals from both Kirklees and Calderdale.
Councillor Jane Rylah, Cabinet Member for Education, stated: "Thinking about the future can be exciting but also daunting for any young person, especially if they have additional needs and may face extra challenges in their careers. I'm so pleased this event brings many opportunities and support together under one roof so that people can find out more about what is available to them in a safe and welcoming space. The event opens up a world of possibilities for an exciting future. It highlights our ambition for young people with SEND and our commitment to helping them achieve the very best outcomes."
Helping Young People Build Confidence for the Future
Councillor Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, added: "Young people with SEND and their families are sure to get a lot from this exciting event. Events like this can genuinely change lives. It's a great opportunity to meet prospective employers, ask questions, and discover training or work opportunities they might never have considered before. I hope it will help young people approach their future careers with more confidence."

The event is free to attend, but places must be booked in advance.
