Unlock Your Future: How Hands-On STEM Workshops in Southampton Are Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

Igniting Curiosity in STEM Careers

More than 160 school pupils explored the world of STEM careers during a hands-on learning event held at Solent University’s Spark Building in Southampton. This full-day programme was delivered by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), education charity SmartSTEMs, and Solent University, targeting pupils aged 10 to 14 to ignite curiosity and build confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Interactive Workshops and Engaging Talks

Attendees met professionals from a range of STEM industries, including power and infrastructure, construction, and innovation. Workshops included designing overhead power networks, building bug hotels, and simulating the laying of subsea electricity cables in a paddling pool. These activities provided practical, real-world experiences to inspire future career paths.

Ian Burnham, SSEN’s head of large capital delivery for Central Southern England, emphasized the importance of such events: "Events like this are more than just educational; they’re about opening doors, breaking down barriers, and showing students that a future in science, technology, engineering or mathematics is within their reach." He added, "We’re incredibly proud to partner with SmartSTEMs and Solent University to help nurture the next generation of innovators, while also strengthening our connection to our local communities."

Building a Resilient Future

The event was sponsored by SSEN’s Large Capital Delivery (LCD) team, which is investing more than £155m to upgrade Southampton’s electricity distribution network. SSEN and its contract partners, including Clancy, are working together to deliver a resilient, flexible, and future-proof energy infrastructure for the city.

Karen Adams, head of operations at SmartSTEMs, highlighted the impact: "At SmartSTEMs, we’re all about showing young people that STEM is exciting, creative and something they can be part of. Events like this are so important because they let pupils get stuck in, try something new and see real people working in STEM jobs. When they meet role models they can relate to, it helps them picture a future they might not have thought was possible and that is where the spark starts."
