Learners from Ninestiles, an Academy, part of the Summit Learning Trust, have been celebrating National Careers Week with a dynamic programme of activities designed to inspire ambition, broaden horizons, and connect them with employers and higher education providers.

Launching with "Own Your Future"

The week launched with a special Tutor Time session themed “Own Your Future,” encouraging learners to reflect on their skills, interests, and aspirations. Throughout the week, learners engaged directly with professionals to gain insight into different career pathways.

Highlights for Different Year Groups

  • Year 7s attended an employer assembly with Matt Franks, the school’s work experience co-ordinator.
  • Year 8s were inspired by a visit from Smile Education.
  • Year 9s heard from representatives of National Highways and HSBC, gaining insight into careers in infrastructure, finance, and beyond.

Preparing Year 10s for the World of Work

For year 10s, the focus was on preparing for the world of work. Families participated in Work Experience (WEX) parental workshops, providing guidance to help students secure meaningful placements. Learners also joined employer workshops delivered by Smart Education and a dedicated Work Experience assembly to ensure they are fully prepared for their placements.

Exploring Higher Education Pathways

Higher education pathways were highlighted through university visits. Year 9s in the Accelerate programme explored Birmingham City University, while Year 10s visited the University of Oxford for a first-hand experience of university life and study options. Additionally, year 10s took part in the Future YOU workshop, focusing on entrepreneurship, employability skills, and career planning.

Utilizing Careers Platforms and Engaging Activities

Learners were also reminded to make full use of Unifrog, the school’s careers platform, to explore career pathways, apprenticeships, university courses, and employment opportunities. To keep the week engaging, tutor groups also participated in a “Who Do You Think We Are?” careers quiz, sparking discussions about professions and rewarding winners with chocolate prizes.

Principal's Perspective

Alex Hughes, Principal at Ninestiles, an Academy said: "National Careers Week is an invaluable opportunity for our learners to explore the wide range of pathways open to them. By connecting with employers, universities, and career experts, our young people gain the confidence, knowledge, and inspiration they need to make informed choices about their futures. We are proud to see them engaging so enthusiastically and thinking ahead about their next steps."
