Through the Careers on Wheels initiative, students dive into the world of adult social care and health onboard East Riding of Yorkshire Council's learning and skills bus. Dynamic, hands-on sessions help them discover vital roles and rewarding career paths that support vulnerable people in communities.

Led by the council's workforce and education team, the initiative uses interactive games and real-life scenarios to spark curiosity and highlight the importance of communication, empathy, and a positive attitude—key attributes for careers in this field.

Interactive session Partnerships with organizations like the NHS help students identify their 'superpowers' such as patience, resilience, and compassion.

So far, the bus has visited multiple schools, delivering engaging sessions. Holly Robinson, careers guidance lead at Driffield Secondary School, noted, 'Students benefited from talking to real people in small groups, making it logistically easier than off-site visits.'

Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adult social care, emphasized that this is part of a broader plan to enhance education and workforce development, aiming for a more sustainable health and care system.

The initiative also supports adults in the region, offering resources for career exploration. Over the next 18 months, it will continue visiting rural and coastal areas to inspire the next generation of healthcare heroes.

Upcoming visits this autumn include Goole Academy and Holderness Academy, with a return to Driffield Secondary School.
