Unlocking Career Opportunities: How ISCAL Empowers Local Talent in Calderdale

Empowering Careers with ISCAL

A group of Calderdale residents has been enhancing their skills through the ISCAL employability skills programme. This initiative, operated by Calderdale Council, aims to assist individuals with disabilities and health conditions in overcoming employment barriers.

The Programme Overview

In a recent eight-week programme, eight participants focused on developing essential work skills. The curriculum included:

  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Adaptability
  • Resilience

Practical Experience and Support

The Calderdale Employment Hub provided support with interview techniques and organized visits to local businesses, such as J&C Joel and Covea Group. Participants also engaged in mock interviews at Covea, refining their newly learned skills.

Skills in Action

At ISCAL, participants gained hands-on experience in various tasks like customer support, coaster printing, cleaning, and upcycling furniture. By the end of the programme, all participants reported increased confidence and clarity about their career paths. One participant has already secured employment, while others continue to receive support.

Celebrating Achievements

Certificates were awarded to participants, presented by Robin Tuddenham, Chief Executive of the Council, and Cllr Sarah Courtney, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport. Cllr Courtney emphasized the importance of ISCAL in providing life and employment skills to help individuals thrive in the workplace.

Insights from Covea

Malcolm Nutton, Senior Facilities Manager at Covea Insurance, praised the participants for their engagement during the mock interviews, noting their professionalism and dedication.

Participant Feedback

Alahna, a participant, shared her experience: “Taking part in this course really helped with my confidence – it showed me that I’m more capable than I thought I was, and I had a lot of fun learning new skills.”

Future Opportunities

ISCAL also offers a Youth Employment and Skills Programme for young people aged 16-19, focusing on equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for employment.
