Unlocking Creativity: How RCA's Technical Team Transforms Artistic Journeys

When you're choosing a university for postgraduate study, you're likely weighing factors like reputation, location, and course structure. But have you considered what might be the most crucial element of your educational experience?

A great technical services team can mean the difference between bringing your concept to life and lacking the knowledge to realize it. At the Royal College of Art (RCA), a hidden powerhouse awaits.

With more than 100 specialists, spanning fields from motion capture to metalwork, sound engineering to fabric dyeing, these experts represent far more than a support system—they are active collaborators in the creative process.

"The technical services staff were fundamental to my experience at the RCA, generous with their time, knowledge and support," recalls Tom Scrimgeour, Design Products MA (class of 2024).

In the first of a two-part series, we chatted with members of this vital team to discover how they become mentors, collaborators, and catalysts for creative transformation.

Breaking Barriers

Charlotte Raymen, lead technical instructor in visual and immersive technology, has been running the XR Lab and Motion Capture space since 2021. With a background in filmmaking, she aims to make technology more accessible.

"New technology is so unfriendly. I want to empower anyone to use our equipment and feel like they're in on it, almost like they're fellow technicians," says Charlotte.

This collaborative environment allows students to become active participants in their learning, regardless of their course of study.

Sound Thinking, Beyond Boundaries

Joe Hirst, the RCA's sound technician, brings over two decades of experience to his role. He runs workshops focusing on sound in various disciplines, helping students overcome the daunting aspects of sound production.

The Art of Dyeing: Craft Meets Contemporary

Eloise O'Brian Scott, specialist technical instructor in dyeing and printed textiles, reflects on her journey from student to mentor. The dye workshop serves as a hub for cross-disciplinary explorations, with students from around 20 different courses utilizing the space.

Physical Meets Digital

The technical services team emphasizes the importance of hands-on experiences. Joe promotes working with sound physically, while Charlotte's VR work integrates bodily movements into the digital realm. Eloise connects students directly with materials, even collaborating with London's Design Museum to create a garden for dye-making.

The Future in Focus

As the RCA evolves, its technical services team balances cutting-edge technology with timeless creative principles. This pragmatic approach makes them an invaluable resource for students, facilitating the transformation of creative visions into reality.

For prospective students, the message is clear: you'll have access to state-of-the-art facilities and the minds behind them—experts ready to help you realize your creative vision, whatever form it may take.
