Unlocking Futures: Oxford University Hosts Inspiring STEM Careers Event for Young Students

A Day of Exploration at Oxford University
More than 180 school pupils from Oxfordshire gathered at Jesus and Trinity Colleges at the University of Oxford for an exciting event focusing on STEM careers. Aimed at students aged 10 to 14, the event featured interactive workshops and insights from professionals in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
Engaging with Industry Professionals
Students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from diverse organizations, asking questions and learning about career possibilities in areas such as power and infrastructure, construction, renewable energy, and innovation. The event was a collaborative effort organized by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), Oxford University, and the education charity SmartSTEMs.
Learning for a Greener Future
During the event, students were educated on the skills and technologies necessary for supporting the transition to net zero. They learned about the significant role they will play in creating a sustainable future and the various career paths that await them.
Inspirational Speakers
Ian Burnham, SSEN’s head of large capital delivery for central southern England, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the importance of exposing students to the wide array of career opportunities in STEM. He stated, "By participating in workshops and engaging with professionals, we hope these pupils will feel inspired to explore new possibilities."
Dame Hilary Boulding and Lady Elish Angiolini also shared their insights, encouraging young attendees to consider the vast opportunities within STEM fields. Lady Elish noted, "It’s been an honor to introduce this SmartSTEMs event, showcasing the eagerness of these young minds towards potentially fascinating careers."

Karen Adams, head of operations for SmartSTEMs, remarked on the success of the event, highlighting the hands-on workshops that inspired the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. She emphasized the importance of collaboration in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
