Unlocking Potential: How Career Guidance Can Revive Northern Ireland's Economy

Northern Ireland's Skills Crisis
The Career Development Institute (CDI) launched its Valuing Careers campaign at Northern Ireland’s Stormont Assembly on February 18, focusing on the critical skills crisis affecting economic growth.
Dr. Caoimhe Archibald, Minister for the Economy, emphasized the urgent need for targeted career support during the campaign's opening remarks.
Importance of Career Guidance
The campaign is based on a YouGov survey of 5,004 UK working-age adults, aiming to enhance awareness of the value that career development brings to individuals and society.
The research highlights:
- Career aspirations of adults and the challenges they face, such as low confidence and family responsibilities.
- The benefits of engaging with professional careers guidance and the barriers to accessing such support.
Skills Shortages Impacting Business
A report from the Northern Ireland Audit Office in September 2024 indicated that 35% of job vacancies arise from skills shortages, severely hindering business performance and economic growth. This deficit is costing Northern Ireland, with over 40% of employers reporting delays in product development and loss of business.
David Morgan, Chief Executive of the CDI, stated, “Northern Ireland’s economic success is being limited by these skills shortages.” He urged more individuals to seek guidance from qualified professionals to enhance their career paths.
Key Findings from the Research
- 54% of adults feel positive about their career prospects, linking career positivity with overall life satisfaction.
- 75% have career aspirations, yet 80% foresee barriers to achieving them.
- Only 15% have sought professional careers guidance since leaving education.
- 86% of those who received professional support reported substantial benefits.
- 62% believe they would benefit from career support but are unaware of available services.
The Way Forward
The Valuing Careers campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of collaborating with qualified career development professionals. The UK Register of Career Development Professionals lists qualified members who can provide guidance.
As Northern Ireland faces its employment challenges, this initiative showcases how professional career guidance can stimulate economic growth and assist individuals in navigating a complex job market. The Stormont event is the first of several regional launches across the UK, uniting policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to discuss the vital role of career development in economic recovery and growth.
