Wakefield Trials Groundbreaking Jobs and Careers Service

Wakefield has been selected as the first area in the UK to trial an innovative 'pathfinder' scheme, designed to personalize jobseeker support. This pilot, a collaboration between the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Wakefield Local Authority, aims to create a tailored pathway into quality employment.

A New Approach to Employment Support

The scheme introduces a coaching academy for Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) staff, enhancing their ability to provide personalized guidance. Additionally, it plans to merge the National Careers Service with jobcentres, a move announced to tackle the rising issue of economic inactivity.

Addressing the NEET Challenge

With close to 1 million young people classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), the initiative seeks to reduce these numbers by offering more targeted support. Wakefield, with a 3.5% NEET rate, is at the forefront of testing these new services.

Funding and Future Plans

The autumn budget allocated £55 million for the development of this service in 2025/26. While the exact funding for the Wakefield pilot remains unclear, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has approved a £37 million plan to integrate NHS services with employment support.

Engaging Local Employers

The pilot will also feature careers events connecting jobseekers with local employers, particularly in the manufacturing and technology sectors. These events aim to be inclusive, welcoming not just jobseekers but the general public.

Voices from the Initiative

Mayor Tracy Brabin emphasized the importance of dignity and respect in jobcentres, while Councillor Denise Jeffery highlighted the need for tailored employment support. DWP employment minister Alison McGovern criticized the one-size-fits-all approach, advocating for a community-focused employment service.
