Why Parents Struggle to Understand Their Children's Modern Career Dreams

A Growing Gap in Career Aspirations
A new study reveals a growing generational divide regarding career aspirations, highlighting how young people are leaning towards tech-driven and creative roles that their parents might not fully understand.

While older generations favor traditional roles, today's youth are dreaming of careers in video game design, software engineering, and even becoming YouTube stars. In fact, 75% of 11 to 17-year-olds believe that being online has exposed them to more exciting job options, but they feel their parents view these as unstable career choices.
67% of parents express concerns over their children's aspirations, labeling them as potentially unstable. To bridge this gap, EE has partnered with BAFTA to offer teens a taste of the creative industry.
The 'Set the Stage' Initiative
EE is launching the 'Set the Stage' campaign, encouraging teens aged 15 to 17 to apply for crew roles in a short film set for release in 2026. The initiative aims to help parents and children connect their interests with future career paths.
Daisy Edgar-Jones, a BAFTA-nominated actress, will mentor aspiring filmmakers, helping them bring their stories to life. According to Baroness Floella Benjamin, it’s crucial to connect the skills gained through gaming, social media, and digital platforms to future opportunities in the arts.
Recognizing Valuable Skills
Parents acknowledge that their children develop valuable soft skills like creativity, socializing, and empathy through technology. Additionally, they recognize the hard skills gained in areas such as coding and digital literacy.
EE's spokesperson emphasized the importance of inspiring children to explore their passions in areas like makeup, fashion, and production.
Deadline for applications is April 25, 2025.
