Why Young People Are Ditching Traditional Jobs for Gaming and Social Media Careers

A Shift in Career Aspirations

New research reveals that Generation Z is eager to move away from traditional job roles, with many aspiring to become professional gamers or social media experts. A survey of 2,000 individuals aged 18 to 29 highlights a trend towards aligning work with personal interests and passions while prioritizing wellbeing.

Key Findings

  • 33% dream of becoming a professional gamer.
  • Over 56% would prefer a career in social media.
  • 73% value a good work/life balance.
  • 55% consider a potential employer's environmental impact when evaluating job offers.

Many young people also favor jobs with a positive work culture over traditional office positions. Over a third (34%) want to work for companies that offer strong mental health support, and 26% emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion programs.

Hobbies and Interests

The top hobbies among this demographic include social media (51%), travel (49%), and spending time with friends (41%). Approximately 25% stated that gaming is their preferred way to unwind.

The Rail Industry's Appeal

This research, commissioned by Southeastern Rail, aimed to understand how the aspirations of young people align with careers in rail. With an average salary of £28,366 for under 30s and perks like free travel worth over £3,000, roles within Southeastern could meet many of their expectations.

Opportunities in the Rail Sector

Gaming enthusiasts with strong control skills might excel in control rooms, while those adept at social media could thrive in marketing positions. The rail sector emphasizes that experience is not a barrier and is keen to attract young talent by aligning with their values and interests.

Steve Foster, People Director at Southeastern, stated, "We are working hard to change perceptions around rail and attract young people to a career in rail's exciting, digital, and green future." He noted that the variety of roles in the rail industry matches the priorities of the youth, including sustainability and lifestyle-friendly working hours.

The Future of Rail

As the railways celebrate their 200th anniversary, they are moving towards a digital and sustainable future, retaining their position as the most eco-friendly mass transport option available.
