Ysgol Bro Gwaun Triumphs in Tasty Careers Challenge: A Gateway to Future Food Industry Leaders
Pembrokeshire's Ysgol Bro Gwaun has emerged victorious in this year’s Tasty Careers Schools Challenge, outshining competitors from across South Wales. This competition, a brainchild of the National Skills Academy for Food & Drink (NSAFD) Wales, in collaboration with the Welsh Government and Careers Wales, aims to inspire the next generation of food industry professionals.
The Challenge That’s Shaping Future Foodies
Pupils were tasked with designing healthy, sustainable, and commercially viable food products, incorporating as much Welsh produce as possible. The finals, held at Parc Y Scarlets in Llanelli, saw teams presenting innovative creations, from a pudding resembling Welsh mountains to a health drink dubbed the ‘Welshake’.
A Winning Dish with a Welsh Twist
Ysgol Bro Gwaun clinched the title with their ‘Mac & Caws’ – a versatile macaroni pasta dish offering both meat and vegetarian options. This victory not only highlights their creativity but also their understanding of sustainability and market needs.
More Than Just a Competition
Since its inception in 2018, the Tasty Careers Schools Challenge has grown significantly, with over 1200 participants this year. Past winners have seen their products professionally produced and sold, showcasing the competition’s real-world impact.
Industry Leaders Weigh In
Louise Cairns, CEO for NSAFD/Tasty Careers, praised the entrants for their innovation and emphasized the competition’s role in sparking interest in Wales’ food and drink sector. Kate Rees and Aled Evans also highlighted the event’s importance in nurturing future talent and broadening pupils’ career aspirations.
