The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer role is responsible for the successful delivery of allocated hydraulic projects, or a defined hydraulic scope of work from the Head of Design & Draughting, that fall within MDL’s service offering.
Typically, the Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer will work as part of the Shared Services Engineering Team and in support of the Asset Maintenance, New Builds and/or Rental teams within MDL to successfully deliver allocated project workscopes.
The Hydraulic Project / Design Engineer should support the full hydraulic scope through its entire project life cycle from initial specification / kick off, engineering phase, manufacture, assembly, testing, through to the delivery or execution. They must draw on technical experience and ensure technical integrity through setting best practice and providing a high level of technical guidance on all Hydraulic Engineering related matters.
Key Tasks include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring project documentation, procedures and associated work instructions are developed and defined in line with MDL / Client procedures
- Cost management of the hydraulic budgets associated with the wider project workscope
- To design new hydraulic systems and electro-hydraulic equipment for MDL rental equipment or MDL external clients in conjunction with the wider multi-disciplined engineering and projects teams.
- To implement and project manage hydraulic upgrades to existing MDL and client owned equipment
- Work closely with the overall Engineering Team, Hydraulic workshop personnel & offshore Teams displaying strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- To liaise with hydraulic sub-contractors and suppliers in conjunction with the MDL projects, procurement and engineering teams.
- Detail-orientated time management and meeting deadlines with a focus on project schedules.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and identify inefficiencies and cost optimisation opportunities.
- Create and implement best practice directives, policies, and processes to improve operational and financial performance.
- Deliver solutions to problems while maintaining high levels of quality and service within budgetary requirements.
- Championing ‘One Team MDL’ approach and acting as an MDL ambassador.
Collaboration and Communication
- Strong and effective working relationships with all internal stakeholders.
- Work closely with the Design, Draughting and Project Engineering Teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Liaise with Engineering Manager, Mechanical Design Engineers, Draftspersons and Project Engineers to align on project requirements.
- Contribute to internal design reviews and inter- disciplinary checks.
- Liaise with external design standards organisations to achieve design verification.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure alignment on design scope and deliverables.
- Support and mentor less experienced members of the team, where applicable.
- Set the standard, leading by example in terms of professionalism and work ethic
- Attend project KO meetings as required
- Attend client meetings as requested.
Integrated Management System (IMS), HSEQ & Continuous Improvement
- Follow MDL Integrated Management System, Policies and Procedures.
- Contribute to the update and development of IMS policies and procedures.
- Ensure all engineering output is compliant with applicable HSEQ and technical standards
- Support continuous improvement of engineering practices and tools
- Participate in lessons learned and feedback sessions
- Demonstrate good practice in the checking, approval and storage of all relevant documentation.
- To show commitment to HSEQ and to set good personal examples on HSEQ issues within their area of operation and influence.
- To always lead by example and set high standards in all aspects of their role.

Skills and Knowledge
Leadership:
- OneTeam MDL will be looking to the Hydraulic Project/Design Engineer to provide technical leadership on how to ensure equipment reliability, project success and client solutions to meet the MDL scopes.
- Ensure positive engagement of stakeholders within MDL & customers by facilitating clear and concise communication channels.
- Promote HSEQ leadership across all MDL departments.
Knowledge:
- Technically competent in generating, reading, interpreting and following hydraulic schematics and wiring diagram is an essential requirement of the role.
- Competent in the use of CAD software.
- Prior design experience and knowledge of open and closed loop hydraulic systems is essential including in-depth knowledge of Rexroth, Parker, Wandfluh and similar hydraulic manufacturer’s products and equipment.
- Competent in specifying hydraulic and electro-hydraulic components, valves, hoses and pipework sizing to suit design applications such as winches, tensioners, hydraulic power units, cranes and back deck equipment.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations is essential

Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant subject discipline preferred although consideration will be given to candidates with HNC / HND and/or relevant industry experience in a similar role.
- Cetop, NFPA, or BFPA hydraulic training would be advantageous
