Construction Careers Come Alive for Hundreds of Students at Interactive Insight Day

Almost 200 students from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire explored the world of construction at an interactive careers event, trying out skills and discovering opportunities to shape their future careers.

Insight Day at Stevenage Education Support Centre gave students practical experience of the construction sector, from bricklaying and tiling to plumbing, wiring, drylining and even a dumper truck simulation. Through immersive activities, teamwork challenges and live demonstrations, participants explored a wide range of trades and potential career pathways.

The event is part of the Hop Into Construction initiative, led by Hertfordshire Cornerstone Construction Group members Willmott Dixon, Morgan Sindall, BAM, AVV Solutions, in partnership with Hertfordshire Futures.

Natalie Sidey, social value manager at Willmott Dixon said: “Insight Day is more than just trying out trades, it’s about shaping the next generation of builders, engineers and project managers. Seeing students gain confidence, discover new skills and imagine themselves in a career in construction is what makes these events so impactful.”

Since its beginnings as smaller taster sessions, Insight Day has grown into a large-scale event, attracting over 20 schools, more than 30 volunteers and a dozen employers this year. Colleges and apprenticeship providers also joined, helping students link their study options with real career opportunities.

June Wilkinson, social sustainability manager, South at BAM, said: “The Insights Day is a fantastic opportunity for students to ‘have a go’ at trades and learn about careers that they have only heard about. This helps them make an informed decision about college courses and apprenticeships.”

The programme has made a significant impact, raising awareness of construction careers and providing tangible opportunities for young people.
