The Unexpected Career Shift
In recent years, a new type of AI company has emerged, such as Mercor and Surge AI, largely staffed by former white-collar workers. This includes former lawyers, scientists, copywriters, and screenwriters who are now training the very AI systems that are automating their old jobs.
A Desperate Click Leads to an AI Interview
Katya, a freelance journalist turned content marketer, was struggling after AI had automated much of her work. She came across a LinkedIn post from Crossing Hurdles, promising copywriting jobs at $45 per hour. Skeptical but desperate, she clicked and was redirected to Mercor's website, where she was instructed to interview on-camera with an AI named Melvin.
"It just seemed like the sketchiest thing in the world," Katya recalls. She initially closed the tab, but weeks later, still unemployed, she received another invitation to apply. Upon researching, she discovered that Mercor sells data to train AI, and she was being recruited to create that data.
The Irony of Training Your Replacement
"My job is gone because of ChatGPT, and I was being invited to train the model to do the worst version of it imaginable," Katya says. The idea was depressing, but with a dire financial situation and an urgent need to find new housing, she decided to proceed.
She turned on her webcam and greeted Melvin, a disembodied male voice that seemed to have actually read her résumé and asked specific questions about it. The experience was strange but largely pleasant. A few weeks later, Katya, who requested a pseudonym due to fear of retaliation, received a job offer from Mercor.
The Broader Trend in the AI Industry
This story highlights a growing trend where laid-off professionals are finding work in the AI sector, often in roles that involve training systems that could further displace human workers. It raises questions about the future of employment and the ethical implications of AI development.
