Alisha Carrington, a final-year Social Work student at Wrexham University and a care leaver, is on a mission to transform the perception of the care system through her future career. With just weeks left until she completes her degree, Alisha shares her journey and the unique perspective she brings to social work.

A Unique Perspective on Social Work

Alisha's personal experience within the care system since the age of 11 has equipped her with a deep understanding of both the challenges and the positive impact social workers can have. "I want to be the social worker that changes a young person’s outlook of the care system," she says, highlighting her ambition to make a difference.

Breaking Stereotypes

Despite common negative portrayals, Alisha emphasizes the dedication and positive influence of many social workers. She credits her own growth to the support of her social workers over the years, from Kerry during her teenage years to her current social worker, Adie.

Encouraging Others with Care Experience

Alisha is a strong advocate for more young people with care experience to consider social work as a career. She believes their lived experience is invaluable, offering resilience, empathy, and a unique ability to connect with those in the system.

Support from Wrexham University

Nick Hoose, Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Wrexham University, praises Alisha's empathy, resilience, and insight—qualities he deems essential for social work. He also supports the call for more care-experienced individuals to join the profession, noting their invaluable insights and ability to make meaningful connections.
