Middlesbrough College students recently participated in a two-day Green Careers Event designed to showcase the skills and technologies driving the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy. The event, held on 5-6 May 2026, was organized in partnership with engineering and infrastructure consultancy AECOM.
Students from Engineering, Construction, Business, and Teaching, Training & Education heard from professionals involved in major sustainability projects. Kathy Wilson, Head of Human Excellence and Technical Director at AECOM, highlighted the importance of connecting classroom learning with real-world applications, citing the Great British Energy Project which involves installing solar panels and LED lighting in 77 schools across the North East.
Day one featured live demonstrations of technologies like solar energy, electric vehicle infrastructure, battery storage systems, drone surveying, and energy-efficient building design. Day two included a careers fair where students explored apprenticeships, training routes, and graduate opportunities.
Representatives from the Department for Education also attended, emphasizing the need for skills development to support the UK's net zero ambitions. The event is part of the College's commitment to preparing students for emerging green industries.
