West Leigh School recently transformed an ordinary school day into an extraordinary journey of inspiration and discovery during their Careers Day event. Pupils were not just passive listeners but active participants in a day filled with workshops, presentations, and a once-in-a-lifetime assembly with Olympic gymnast Georgia-Mae Fenton.
A Day of Discovery and Inspiration
The event was designed to explore the vast array of skills required across different professions, with workshops and presentations led by parents and community members. Among the notable speakers was David Barton-Sampson, the MP for Southend West and Leigh, who shared insights into public service and leadership.
The Olympic Touch
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the assembly with Georgia-Mae Fenton, who brought her Olympic medals for the children to hold. She shared her journey to becoming an Olympic gymnast, including the challenges and triumphs along the way. Fenton didn't just talk; she demonstrated her skills and even got the headteacher, Mr. Aggus, to attempt cartwheels, much to the delight of the students.
Engaging the Next Generation
The children were thrilled to interact with Fenton, asking questions about her life as a gymnast and what it takes to reach the pinnacle of sports. The school spokesperson reflected on the day, saying, "It was a brilliant day with children engaging in various activities that allowed them to explore skills required for different jobs. They attended workshops and presentations delivered by parents and members of the community."
This event not only provided a glimpse into various career paths but also inspired the pupils to dream big, showing them that with dedication and hard work, even Olympic glory is within reach.
