Forty local pupils from Cambridge House Grammar School got a behind-the-scenes look at careers in hospitality and tourism through the World of Work programme at Galgorm Resort. The initiative, funded by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, aims to connect classroom learning with real workplace opportunities.
Bringing Careers Out of the Classroom
Following a successful pilot in 2025, the programme has expanded to 54 sessions across seven primary and eight post-primary schools. It challenges misconceptions about hospitality by showcasing diverse roles from events and marketing to spa, grounds, and sustainability.
Mayor Councillor Jackson Minford said: "Hospitality and tourism are vital to our local economy, and initiatives like this will help young people understand the exciting career opportunities available right here."
A Hands-On Look at Life Inside Galgorm
Before the visit, the Galgorm Collection team introduced students to hospitality through an interactive team-building exercise where pupils created event ideas like a murder mystery at The Old Inn or a private pool party at The Rabbit Hotel.
During the resort visit, students engaged in practical activities:
- Crafting mocktails behind the bar
- Decorating cupcakes with a pastry chef
- Planting biodegradable pots with the grounds team
- Learning housekeeping skills like bed-making and towel animal folding
- Participating in wellness sessions with a spa therapist
- Exploring nutrition and exercises with a personal trainer
- Learning about sustainability and safety protocols
Employers Hope to Inspire Future Talent
Laura Millar, People and Development Associate Director at Galgorm Collection, said: "Programmes such as this are invaluable for opening minds to careers in hospitality. We are delighted to deliver creative and practical sessions that give great insight into our sector."
Partner organisations include Tullyglass House Hotel, Adair Arms Hotel, Harbourview Hotel, Papa Browns, and Tourism NI, which provided VR experiences.
Local Skills for a Growing Sector
Mr Bleakley, Careers Teacher at Cambridge House, said: "Our Year 11 students are studying GCSE Food and Nutrition, so this programme was a perfect addition. It was exceptionally well received."
The programme strengthens school-employer relationships and supports the long-term development of a skilled local workforce in Mid and East Antrim.
