Exploring Green Careers at University of Essex
Hundreds of teenagers were given a taste of the future at a hands-on green careers showcase at the University of Essex. The event, known as the Greenest Generation careers showcase, brought together 240 young people aged 14 to 18 to explore career pathways in clean energy, construction, logistics, and conservation.
Partnership and Innovation
The exhibition saw the university join forces with Freeport East through the Skills and Innovation Fund, as the site prepares to expand. This collaboration enabled the delivery of interactive experiences, including virtual reality simulations to engage students in learning about various industries.

Engaging with Industry Leaders
Young people about to enter the world of work met university researchers, high-tech industry professionals, and organisations like Colchester Zoological Society. Olivia Solanke, outreach officer at the University of Essex, highlighted the importance of the event: "The partnership with Freeport East has enabled the university to continue to deliver and grow our Greenest Generation event, supporting local young students realise their potential in key jobs needed in the future."

Student Participation and Feedback
Participating schools included The Sixth Form College, St Helena School, Paxman Academy in Colchester, Colne Community School in Brightlingsea, Lift Clacton, and Market Fields College. A student who attended shared their experience: "The best thing about today was learning about the different engineering paths, since I am interested in engineering. It was also great to discover jobs in the local community and we got to experience university-style lessons."

Hands-On Activities
The showcase featured various interactive stations, such as learning about HGV driving through virtual simulations and gaining hands-on experience with renewable energy technologies.

Conservation and Wildlife Insights
Colchester Zoological Society contributed by sharing knowledge on endangered animals, adding an educational dimension to the event.

This event underscores the growing interest among youth in sustainable careers and the role of educational institutions in bridging the gap between academia and industry.
